The presale of beet pressed pulp and cigarant started on Monday 6 May. The co-products both start at a higher price level than last year. There was no drought then.
Feed manufacturer Duynie, part of Royal Cosun, has set the price for beet pressed pulp for the first round of the 2019 campaign at €1,65 per percent dry matter. That is €0,30 higher than in 2018. The price of cigarette also increases by €0,30 and therefore comes to €1,40 per percent dry matter. Prices do not include discounts and surcharges.
Duynie reports that pressed pulp was 'dirt cheap' in pre-sale last year, because there was no drought at that time. Due to the dry summer, the beet harvest turned out to be considerably lower, resulting in scarcity. Contrary to expectations, Duynie was finally able to deliver the promised volumes to livestock farmers still deliver.
Seasoning in ration
Pressed pulp consists entirely of natural nutrients and is mainly used as a seasoning for roughage. In 2017, 895.000 tons of the product, originating from sugar beet, was sold in the Netherlands. This makes pressed pulp the largest residual flow in moisture-rich animal feeds. The origin of cigarant is chicory. Of this, 2017 tons were sold in the Netherlands in 40.000.
