African swine fever hits Hong Kong

13 May 2019 - Wouter Baan

African swine fever has now been detected in all provinces in China and Hong Kong has now also been affected by the virus. The disease appeared at a slaughterhouse in this independent Chinese region last week.

According to the authorities, African swine fever was found in a pig that was imported live from the province of 'Guangdong'. The 6.000 pigs that were present on site have now been culled as a precaution.

Although China and Hong Kong are often lumped together, they are 1 separate administrative areas. In addition, Hong Kong is an important market for European pork and is often referred to as the gateway to Asia.

World Pork Expo cancelled
In the United States, everything is done to keep the virus out. It has therefore been decided to cancel the World Pork Expo, which was scheduled for early June. This is because the international character of the event would increase the chance of the disease being introduced.
