Belgium sees new cases of African swine fever

16 May 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

A number of cases of African swine fever have again been found in Belgium. The surveillance area has therefore been expanded in a northerly direction. This is what the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FAVV) writes on its website.

In the forest of Chiny, near the French border, some dead wild boars with African swine fever have recently been found again. It FASFC informs us that it has therefore been decided, in consultation with the European Commission, to extend the surveillance area in a northerly direction.

Since the outbreak in September 2018, a total of 2.602 wild boars have been checked for this animal disease. The investigation revealed, among other things, that 797 carcasses were infected with African swine fever. At the end of April, the counter stood at 765 infected animals, which means that 10 new cases were found in the first 32 days of May.

Germany takes measures
Due to the development in Belgium, Germany has decided to increase the introduction risk of African swine fever. In particular, reference is made to a greater risk of introduction via wild boars. This is partly due to the fact that the disease spreads over great distances, which can also be seen in China.
