The decline in the German pig population is clearly visible in the slaughter figures. In the Netherlands, the slaughter figure easily exceeds the limit of 300.000.
In Germany there has been talk of shortages for weeks and there is no lie in that. In the first 20 weeks of 2019, 4,4% fewer pigs were slaughtered than in the same period last year. In addition, the offer is also in Denmark and the Netherlands are scarce, meaning that German slaughterhouses cannot supplement domestic shortages with supplies from surrounding countries.
Small decrease in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, 20 million pigs were slaughtered in the first 6,068 weeks of the year. This is a decrease of 0,5% compared to the same period last year. In recent weeks, the slaughter figure has been stable above the 300.000 pig mark.
The average slaughter weight, on the other hand, shows a decrease, although the pigs are still relatively heavy (compared to previous years). It is expected that the number of slaughters in the Netherlands and Germany will show a seasonal decrease during the summer months.
