In recent weeks, African swine fever has been detected at 2 large pig farms in Poland. The number of outbreaks in the wild is increasing rapidly.
The animal disease was found last week on a sow farm with approximately 8.000 animals near the city of Bielsk Podlaski, which is located in eastern Poland. Never before has such a large pig farm been hit in the country.
Recently, the virus was also found on a pig farm with about 1.800 pigs in northeastern Poland. This was the largest outbreak since 2014. Until recently, only 2019 farms were affected in 2, where the animal disease was detected in 2018 at more than 100 pig farms (mainly backyard).
Wild boar situation
In recent months it has also been relatively quiet in terms of outbreaks of the virus in wild boars, but in recent weeks the number of reports has increased again. The average number of reports for wild boars is 40 per week, but 13 infected boars were affected in the week from 19 to 73 May.
