Although Vion is negative about the situation on the meat market, the pig price is going up for the second week in a row. There is little change in the piglet market compared to previous weeks.
Last week, Vion's pig price increased by €0,03 per kilo and this week the slaughterhouse is increasing the quotation by €0,01 to €1,84 per kilo. This means that the pig price is rising faster than the DCA Exchange Price 2.0, which increased by €0,02 per kilo in the same period.
Tough meat market
Moreover, the higher pork price does not match the picture of the situation on the meat market. Vion speaks of a difficult meat market due to disappointing meat consumption. In addition, selling prices to China are under pressure due to competition from American meat exporters. The German slaughterhouses Tönnies and Vion Germany therefore use a Hauspreise of €1,80 per kilo.
Vion's price is expected to discourage the export of live fattening pigs to Germany. After Easter, prices in Germany rose faster than in the Netherlands, which stimulated deliveries to a German slaughterhouse. The market is hearing that Dutch slaughterhouses have increased the surcharges (after the fact) to ensure sufficient supply. This puts the increase in the pig price into perspective.
No change on the piglet market
The situation on the piglet market is virtually the same last week. There is no supply pressure (yet), although finding placement space for free piglets is more difficult. German piglet prices remain the same at €64 per piglet. In the Netherlands, almost every trader agrees with the level of the DCA BestPigletPrice, which means that the quotation remains stable at €57,50 per piglet.
