It's collecting money on the pig market

The optimistic mood that characterized the pig market last spring has clearly waned. There is now a resigned atmosphere, which means that there is currently no room for higher pig prices.

The Dutch polder model also seems to work on the German pig market. The German pig farmers and slaughterhouses reached an agreement and both compromised. The slaughterhouses increased, while the German producer associations lowered the pig price (the VEZG). This puts the quotations at €1,83 per kilo and the cold is gone from the Hauspreise.

Loss of a slaughter day
Due to the troubles, the upward trend in pig prices has slowed down somewhat. The Internet Exchange remained at €14 per kilo on Friday, June 1,90, with all 14 parties finding a buyer. This implies that demand is good, but that higher pig prices are not immediately within reach.

The German pig supply may have been tight for some time, but the situation on the meat market does not allow higher prices. In addition, there will be 20 day of slaughter in Germany on Thursday, June 1, due to the celebration of Corpus Christi. This means that the pigs are being pulled less at the moment.

Chinese meat consumption is shrinking
There are, however, starting points for the sale of meat parts from Europe. Summer weather has been announced for the coming week, which could give a boost to meat consumption. On the other hand, sales to China are less smooth. Meat sales prices are under pressure. There are reports that consumption in China is being hit by the outbreaks of African swine fever. Rabobank expects consumption to shrink by 10%.

In the Netherlands, the slaughterhouses say they are full. A number of traders do not think it is wise to enforce higher pig prices and are therefore calling for consolidation. However, a number of traders believe that the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 should correct something. That is why the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 for slaughtered pigs increases by €0,01, bringing it to €1,71 kilo. The price of live pigs also increases by €0,01 to €1,38 per kilo.
