Chinese cold stores chock full of pork

June 18, 2019 - Wouter Baan - 10 comments

China has imported so much pork in recent months that the cold stores are now chock full. As a result, the export opportunities of European meat exporters seem to be shrinking.

The warehouses near port cities (such as Shanghai, Tianjin and Dalian) are almost full, Wang Zheng on behalf of the Chinese committee of cold logistics told Bloomberg. There are reportedly half a million tons of pork in storage in Tianjin alone.

Record volumes imported
Especially in the months of March and April, China imported a lot of pork. In March, for example, European member states shipped a record volume of 174.000 tons of pork to China. That is about 40% more than in the same month in 2018. The United States and Brazil also saw their export figures increase significantly.

The meat prices in China have not increased afterwards, so the parties are now waiting to put these stocks on the market. Meat consumption in China generally picks up towards the end of the year. With the ample stocks, China seems to be covered for the time being against meat shortages. They were lurking by the outbreaks of African swine fever.

Meat prices under pressure
The noises about high meat stocks in China correspond to the comments Vion gave this week when explaining the pig price† The slaughterhouse indicated that meat prices in China are currently under heavy pressure.

If they eat 50 grams of pork per day per inhabitant of China, that's 50.000! tons per day.
What are those cold stores there?

The reporting In general, the aim is to produce as much pork as possible by presenting farmers with a sausage. And ultimately to pay the lowest possible price for it.

Last week, a report came out about an even greater shortage of pork in China with associated price increases, and a resulting tightness in the European market.

The psychological game...

In my opinion, it is the job of a journalist to follow news critically and also to question it if necessary and to let readers draw their own conclusions about the news. And not, as in this case, as a follower, taking over everything that someone else has to say and proclaiming the truth.
Then it's better to work at the story or privately!
I often miss critically following the news in farmers' business and it seems that "better" is a bad story than no story

In this case, I think that is clearly the case with clearly "fake news".

Trade magazines/media are sponsored and depend on advertisers and sponsors who determine the content.
