Germany slaughters significantly fewer pigs

June 30, 2019 - Wouter Baan - 8 comments

Significantly fewer pigs were slaughtered in Germany in the first 25 weeks of the year. The slaughter figure has been lagging far behind, especially in recent weeks. This also confirms the tight German pig supply.

The pig supply is expected to remain tight, given the German situation statistics be lower again. Compared to May last year, a decrease of 3,7% is visible. This means that the German pig herd has fallen by 2,2 million animals in just a few years.

Figures from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl) also show that the import of fattening pigs from the Netherlands is under pressure. In the first half of 2019, the number of fattening pigs from the Netherlands fell from 40.000 pigs per week (January) to 21.000 pigs per week (June).

Situation in the Netherlands
Although the Dutch pig herd has also shrunk, the slaughter figures remain at the same level for the above reason. During the full slaughter weeks, the slaughter figure still moves above the 300.000 limit. However, a seasonal decline is obvious.
