AVP supervision area in Belgium expanded again

3 July 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

The surveillance area for African swine fever has been expanded again in Belgium. This is reported by René Collin, the Walloon Minister of Agriculture. The reason for the expansion is the discovery of 2 new cases of African swine fever.

The surveillance area in the Belgian province of Luxembourg has been expanded by 1 hectares as of Monday 7.000 July. This is because wild boars have been found again in the Aubange region with African swine fever† The region had been released earlier, as no new infections had been found for a while. Collin reports that his goal is to clear the entire area from African swine fever by December 31, 2019.

Downward trend
The number of finds of wild boars with the animal disease is now showing a downward trend. At the end of May there were still 814 infected wild boars, while in mid-June this increased to 821 boars. At the last check (end of June) 'only' 2 new cases were found, which means that the counters are at 823.
