The Dutch pig sector is participating in the definitive reduction of the pig population through the Subsidy Scheme for the Remediation of Pig Farms (Srv). Linda Janssen, chairman of the Producers Organization Pig Farming (POV), reports this in a statement. “We comply with the agreements and expect the government to do the same.”
The Dutch pig industry is voluntarily contributing to reducing the pig population from an estimated 5 to 10%. 'In order to meet social needs in an environment where many people and pigs live together,' explains Janssen. 'In addition, we have made agreements with the government about improving the future of the companies that continue.'
It bothers Janssen that she sees little confidence in the so-called warm remediation in the media and among critics. 'The idea is that pig places that are bought up are quickly filled by growing companies. That's a misconception. We make firm agreements with the government about improving the living environment through remediation, and we will honor those agreements.'
Government must step in
The POV emphasizes that the government must also step in and remove obstructive regulations that hinder innovation and sustainability for those who stay. To this end, there is cooperation in the Vital Pig Husbandry programme. However, the POV sees that too much regulation is bogged down by legal flaws.
In the statement, Janssen points out, among other things, the granting of permits for innovations in the field of manure processing, nitrogen regulations (PAS), odor legislation (air scrubbers tested by the government that suddenly no longer comply) and the development of barn systems that tackle emissions from the source. 'Working on a better environment in practice is soon made impossible by legal and paper obstacles. That does not serve anyone, not the farmer, not society and not the environment either.'
