African swine fever hits large Bulgarian company

22 July 2019 - Wouter Baan

African swine fever was diagnosed at a large pig farm in northeastern Bulgaria last weekend.

The 17.000 pigs on the farm have all been culled according to protocol. All meat products from the company in question are destroyed. All pigs that are kept within a radius of 3 kilometers around the infected location are also culled as a precaution.

Many outbreaks in July
The number of outbreaks in Bulgaria is piling up. On 3 July, African swine fever was diagnosed in domestic pigs for the first time this year and 17 farms have been affected since then. However, the 16 outbreaks before this concerned small-scale so-called 'backyard companies', in which a total of 375 pigs were culled.

In addition, about 15 infected wild boars were also found in July. To stop the animal disease, hunters in Bulgaria recently received a reward of €75 per wild boar they shoot within a radius of 20 kilometers around an outbreak.
