Eastern Europe has been ravaged by outbreaks of African swine fever this summer. As the number of outbreaks in Poland and Bulgaria mounts, Slovakia is now also affected.
The outbreak was discovered on Thursday in a village not far from the border with Hungary. All pigs within a radius of 3 kilometers around the company are culled. The outbreak does not come as a surprise, given that neighboring countries Hungary, Poland and Ukraine have been struggling with the contagious animal disease for some time.
Relatively small sector
The pig sector in Slovakia is relatively small with approximately 630.000 animals. Nevertheless, the country is now likely to face export restrictions.
