Regulations thwart Danish piglet export

31 July 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The German and Polish importers of Danish piglets are considering purchasing more from Germany and the Netherlands. This is due to stricter export regulations in Denmark.

Since July 1, the Danish government enforces the European Union's logging obligation, which requires that the journey and destination must be known 48 hours in advance. Even small changes mean that you have to wait 48 hours before the journey can be resumed. This is reported by Danish media.

Moving to the Netherlands?
This happened during the heat last week, when during the daytime in Denmark shelter was sought in shade and waited for lower temperatures during the day. But a broken truck or a change of transport schedule at the last minute can also cause problems. That is why Polish and German importers of Danish piglets are considering shifting their purchasing to the Netherlands and Germany.

In Germany, the authorities would be more flexible in enforcing the logbook obligations for long-distance transport. Danish cattle exporters have now sent a letter to the Danish Minister of Agriculture expressing their dissatisfaction. Some transports are so delayed that the piglets may have to be euthanized. This was because repurposing was no longer possible.
