The slaughter figures have remained reasonably stable over the past few weeks. Due to the extreme heat, some fluctuations are to be expected.
In the Netherlands, the slaughter figure has been fairly stable in recent weeks at around 290.000. The slaughter figure therefore hardly differs from the same week in 2018. The average weight has fallen to 96,40 kilos. That is still well above last year's level.
In Germany, the slaughter figure has increased slightly in recent weeks to just above 900.000 pigs. In the first 29 weeks of the year, 26,2 million pigs were slaughtered. That is 4,4% less than in the same period last year. In the same period, 470.000 breeding sows were slaughtered, which is 8,4% less than the same period last year.
Supply remains tight
The German pig shortage has been noticeable all year and is reportedly continuing to impact the figures. In recent months, the sow herd has fallen further, by 3% to 1,8 million. The number of fattening pigs shrank by almost 5% to 11,3 million, while the number of piglets fell 2,1% to 7,8 million.
