Bulgaria and Romania argue over AVP

8 August 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

A row has broken out between Bulgaria and Romania over the outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF). Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has accused Romanian tourists of being the cause of the African swine fever outbreaks in the country.

In the past 2 weeks, some 130.000 pigs have been culled in Bulgaria in the hope of stopping the spread of the animal disease. Borissov argues that the coming and going of Romanians is the cause of the outbreaks in the country. "There are 57.000 cars driving every day from Romania to Bulgaria. I am sure that Romanian tourists have transmitted the disease. They eat at the side of the road and throw away the remains." In Romania, 300 new outbreaks were reported in July alone.

New measures
According to Prime Minister Borissov's office, new measures have now been put in place. "For example, the incoming vehicles must be disinfected. The customs officers check for illegal transport of pork that has not undergone heat treatment," the organization reports to PigWorld.
