Piglet price picks up unexpectedly quickly

12 August 2019 - Wouter Baan - 32 comments

A few weeks ago, the piglet price fell sharply. Not much water needs to run through the Rhine to turn the tide on the market. The quotations are on the rise again and that is against the seasonal pattern. How come?

Pig prices have taken significant steps upwards in recent weeks. Vion is giving extra gas this week, after last week's quotation was surpassed by everything and everyone. On August 12, the slaughterhouse announced an increase from €0,10 to €1,93 per kilo and now equals the record from 2012 and 2013.

The higher pig prices are boosting demand for piglets. In the eyes of some traders, this means that the ailing piglet market is back on track; they are again calling for an increase. However, the other parties say that sales are still difficult. In other words: the pig traders are quite divided about the mood on the piglet market.

Pluses in Germany
In Germany, the demand for piglets is increasing. This offers prospects for Dutch piglet exports. There are no shortages in Germany either, but that did not stop the VEZG quotation from increasing by €1 to €57 per piglet. This is also the trend report that has been announced for the Nordwest piglet price.

Based on the traders' statements, the DCA BestPigletPrice increases this week by €1 to €45 per piglet. An increase at this time of year does not happen often. Prices are generally now finding a bottom after the traditional summer dip. Whether the increase is a prelude to more will become clear in the coming weeks. Much will depend on movements on the pig market.
