Pork exports from the Netherlands to Japan increased by 20% in the first half. In contrast, the country imports less from the United States. The trade agreement between Japan and the European Union probably also has a part in this.
Japan imported 6% more pork in the first 0,8 months of the year than last year. Total pork imports thus amount to 586.550 tons, compared to 2018 tons in the first half of 582.059. One of the largest percentage increases is due to the Netherlands: +20% to 21.180 tons. However, the Dutch figures are still well behind the top 5.
trade agreement
Japan and the European Union closed in 2017 an agreement in principle for the drafting of a new trade agreement. This treaty has been in force since January and already seems to be bearing fruit. On average, the export of pork from European countries shows a significant increase; for example, the import of German pork increased by 28,5% and that of British pork by 150%.
On the other hand, pork imports from the United States show a decrease: -8,8% to 184.726 tons. However, the country is still by far Japan's largest supplier. Italy (-13,5%) and Portugal (-17,9%) also show a decrease, although these countries do not involve very large volumes in any case.
Also in China Dutch pork exporters have gained considerable ground. Exports to that country increased by more than 50% in the first half of the year. Here, however, the cause for the rising figure must mainly be sought in the country's pig shortage.
