African swine fever has been diagnosed at one of the largest pig farms in Ukraine. The company must cull the 100.000 pigs in the short term, the ministry in the country announced on Wednesday, August 21.

The approximately 100.000 sick pigs were found at the pig farm in western Ukraine on Wednesday, August 17, but the report was only officially released 1 week later. According to the ministry, the pig farmer must have the animals slaughtered in the short term. It is the largest outbreak in the country since 2015, when 60.000 pigs had to be culled.

Large part of pig herd
The animal disease has already affected about 1,6% of the total pig herd in Ukraine. The country has found about 2017 cases of African swine fever and killed more than 351 pigs since 72.000. The pig population in Ukraine was 1 million animals on August 6,4.
