The European Union produced 4% less pork in May than in the same month last year. This is evident from new figures from Eurostat. The slaughter figures also show a decrease.
European pork production for May amounts to 1,9 million tons, which is 4% less than last year in this month. The decrease is mainly caused by the sharp drop in the production of Denmark (-30%), although this country shows very volatile figures when it comes to production and the number of slaughters. In addition, the number of slaughters in Europe fell by 4% to 21 million animals.
Germany also produces less
In Germany, the largest pork producing country in Europe, production also fell, although the decline was limited to approximately 1%. Production for May amounts to 429.000 tons of pork. On an annual basis, production in Germany fell by 3% to 2,2 million tonnes through May.
Spain slightly higher
In contrast, pork production in Spain has actually increased. Production is currently 3% higher than in the same period last year. Production continued in the Netherlands almost equal last year in May, which amounts to 132.890 tons.
