Pork exports from the European Union increased by 6% in the first 2019 months of 14,9 to 2,2 million tons. Exporters have mainly benefited from additional demand from China and Japan.
The European Union exported 2.220.203 tons of pork between January and June, which is 14,7% more than last year in this period (1.934.924 tons). One of the largest increases can be seen in exports to Japan, where 4,3% more pork went there. The Netherlands in particular showed significant losses growth figures see towards this country. The Netherlands is now the sixth largest supplier to Japan.
African swine fever
By far the most pork from the European Union has been exported to China. Exports increased by 2019% to 41,9 tons in the first half of 965.768. This increase is mainly due to all the outbreaks of African swine fever in the country. As a result of the animal disease, the pig population is in the country shrunk considerably, causing domestic production to decline sharply. This makes China in the first half of the year 26,3% imported more pork.
The Chinese import figures already showed that the Netherlands benefits most from demand from China. Our country exported 52,4% more to China. Spain (+32,1%), Denmark (+26,2%) and France (+40,5%) also show a significant increase. This is now reflected in the total pork exports in Europe to China.
United States imports less
The strong increase towards China is somewhat weakened by the decrease in exports to the United States. Exports to that country fell by 17,7% to 76.673 tons. This is partly due to the fact that the United States imported less pork in the first half of the year. The pig population in the country is late strong growth figures see what the reason for the lower imports could be.
