The German slaughter figure has been moving between 850.000 and 900.000 for weeks. These are relatively low numbers. In recent weeks, however, the slaughter figure has again come more in line with the level of 2018.
In the first 33 weeks of the year, 29.794.651 pigs were slaughtered. That is a decrease of 4% compared to last year. The share of slaughter sows has shrunk by 9,3% to 528.304 units during this period.
Situation in the Netherlands
The slaughter figure in the Netherlands took a hit in August, as a result of the extreme heat in July. In week 32, the slaughter figure dropped to 262.000 pigs. The slaughter figure (in a full week) has not been this low since 2015. In the meantime, the seasonal upward trend has started again. So far (up to and including week 33), 9,756 million pigs have been slaughtered in the Netherlands. This is approximately 1% less than in 2018.
In the EU-28, 107,8 million pigs were slaughtered from January to May. This is a decrease of about 1 million pigs (-1%). Countries such as Denmark, Poland and Germany are experiencing shrinkage. There was a significant increase in Spain.
