Thousands of pigs culled in Ukraine again

10 September 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

In Ukraine, another large pig farm has been hit by African swine fever, forcing thousands of pigs to be culled. In addition, Poland is still struggling with new outbreaks of the animal disease.

A large pig farm in Lviv province (western Ukraine) was hit by African swine fever last week. The company therefore had to carry out 72.570 pigs clear† A pig farm in Kavske, located in the same province, was also affected by the disease last week. The company had to slaughter 320 pigs (out of 100.000 pigs). The other animals have not been in contact with the infected pigs, according to authorities.

5 regions in Poland infected
Up to September 4, 45 outbreaks of African swine fever have been detected in Poland, meaning that in 2 months 17 new outbreaks have been detected. Compared to last year, a sharp decrease is visible, because then the number of outbreaks at the end of August amounted to 104.

The disease is now in 5 regions of Poland. Of particular concern, according to the Polish authorities, is the fact that the outbreaks are moving further and further into areas that have not yet been infected. This can also be seen on the map below.
