Supermarket group PLUS has set up a closed chain in collaboration with Vion and 14 Dutch pig farmers. The meat will be on the shelves in mid-October.
In their own words, the collaboration leads to transparency and opportunities in the field of taste, animal welfare and the environment. The parties involved also strive to reduce the environmental impact of pork.
Initially, this concerns 2.800 pigs slaughtered per week. It is expected that in time it can be scaled up to 5.000. "The approach of the collaboration is that every chain participant should be able to earn a living," said Plus. No announcement is made about concrete surcharges that suppliers receive on top of the pig price.
Insight into origin
By opting for a closed chain, Plus can offer transparency about the origin of pork products with the 'Beter Leven 1 star' quality mark from the Animal Protection Agency. This makes communication between supplier, pig farmer and buyer easier.
This step towards our own, closed chain is part of Plus's so-called 'Know the Chain approach'. On the website of the supermarket chain, participating pig farmers presented to the consumer. Some of them open their business to consumers.
Reduce environmental impact
By helping consumers make a responsible choice, Plus chooses to switch a product group to a responsible cooperation chain. The parties involved strive to need as few pigs as possible to meet consumer demand.
