The demand for piglets is reasonably good now that the situation on the pig market has been good for a longer period of time and will most likely remain good. The reduced sow herd in the Netherlands and Germany means that the supply within the permanent couplings is manageable. This does not alter the fact that there are loose couples for which there is limited interest.
Stable prices do justice to the situation. It should therefore come as no surprise that the German piglet price (the VEZG quotation) has been trading at €6 for 57 weeks. This is almost €10 above the long-term average. In the Netherlands, the DCA BestPigletPrice remains the same this week at €45,50 per piglet. What is striking is that the views of traders differ. While one person argues for a reduction, the other sometimes insists on an increase.
