French pig price approaches Spain

18 September 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

The pig price in France has again increased, so that the price is now quite close to the Spanish pig price. This is apparent from the ISN price comparison. In general, however, the market is still characterized by stability.

In general, there is little exciting happening at the pig market. This means that most pig prices in the European Union remain stable. For example, the Dutch pig price is again €1,723 per kilo and the German pig price is again €1,796 per kilo. On the other hand, the Danish pig price shows a minimal decrease for the second week in a row, as it falls by €0,001 to €1,736 per kilo.

France approaches Spain
While most pig prices in Europe are stable or falling, the French pig price is the only one to rise for the second week in a row. The price increases by €0,006 to €1,899, although the increase is therefore much less strong than last week. In week 37 the price rose by no less than €0,050. Since the Spanish pig price has been stable for weeks at €1,930, France is rapidly approaching.

If we look at the graph below, it is noticeable that the situation was reversed last year. In that year, the Spanish pig price fell to the level of the French pig price. In approximately 9 weeks, the pig price fell by €0,24 to €1,39 per kilo, while the price in France was €1,37 per kilo. These two countries have also worked towards each other towards the end of the year in other previous years.

Market under the spell of stability
Although sales to China are going well, the European meat industry is still showing considerable resistance to high pig prices. From the assignments for the DCA Scholarship Price 2.0 it appears that good (export) demand does not yet lead to tight supply. There will also be more than enough pigs available towards next week. The expectation is that the undertone on the market will remain good for the time being.
