Authorities in Thailand confirm that an investigation is underway into a possible outbreak of African swine fever, Reuters reported on Thursday, September 19. To prevent the risk of spreading, more than 200 pigs have been culled as a preventive measure.
Although neighboring Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos have all reported several outbreaks of African swine fever, Thailand has survived this battle unscathed so far. However, there is now some panic, as last week 2 dead pigs were found near the border with Myanmar. The ministry reports that blood and tissue samples from these pigs have been sent to a laboratory, where they are tested for African swine fever.
Preventive clearing
However, the results of this investigation are not expected for about 14 days. In order to pre-empt a possible spread, the authorities in Thailand have decided to cull all pigs within a radius of 1 kilometer. This preventive culling concerns just over 200 pigs, the government reports.
