A day after the massive farmers' protest on the Malieveld, GroenLinks seems to be returning to the political order of the day. The opposition party believes that Rabobank should contribute to the decline in Dutch livestock farming.
GroenLinks believes that Rabobank should take as its loss the loans to agricultural entrepreneurs that have been provided to farmers that are bought up. Bart Snels, Member of Parliament for Finance of GroenLinks, points out, among other things, the buy-out scheme for pig farms. Snels believes that taxpayers should not have to pay for this in full, he says in De Telegraaf.
According to him, Rabobank should therefore write off its loans to agricultural companies. Snels sees that as a 'moral duty.' The MP will ask Wopke Hoekstra, the Minister of Finance, to raise the issue with De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). He wondered whether he should not have warned about the loans to agricultural entrepreneurs.
Rabobank says in a statement that the agricultural sector faces a challenge, reports The Telegraph. According to Rabobank, many agricultural entrepreneurs have invested in making their business operations more sustainable or are working on plans for this. "For us, this is about the interests of both the farmer and society. It is up to the entrepreneur to determine the moment of investment and the pace of sustainability," the bank says.
While many Dutch agribusiness companies expressed their support for the Agractie, Rabobank kept quiet.
