Most pig prices in the European Union are stable again, which means that the pig price in Germany remains stable at €1,796 per kilo. The pig price in the Netherlands also maintains the current level and therefore amounts to €1,723 per kilo for the eighth week. Last week it has already become clear that the Belgian pig price has not been able to keep up since the outbreaks of African swine fever. The price is also lagging behind this week and is €1,655 per kilo.

Where the French pig price is the past weeks quietly climbed towards the Spanish pig price, this movement has now been reversed. The price in Spain has fallen this week by €0,009 to €1,921 per kilo. This means that the price drops towards the level of the French pig price, which is currently €1,903 per kilo.

Against the trend
The Danish pig price, on the other hand, is showing an increase, which means that the price is going against the historical trend. Denmark's pig price will rise this week by €0,027 to €1,763 per kilo, which is the highest level this year. It is striking that the Danish pig price normally chooses the downward path this week: in 2018 the price fell by €0,03 and in line with the 5-year average, a decrease of €0,01 is visible this week.

Compared to other countries in the European Union, the Danish pig price is in the middle bracket and this week it has reached the same level as the pig price in Austria. However, if it wants to rise to the top 3, a big step still needs to be taken. That third place now belongs to Germany, which makes the difference €0,033.

Hope for a higher price disappears
The ample supply of pigs ready for slaughter keeps the market in balance, causing hopes for an even higher pig price to slowly disappear. However, sales of pork to China are (and will probably remain) so good that the traditional dip in the autumn can be countered. At the same time, the range in the Netherlands and surrounding countries is so extensive an increase is also not an issue.
