DCA BestPigletPrice plus 50 cents again

7 October 2019 - Wouter Baan

In other years, piglet prices in Europe moved down during this period, but that is not the case this year. In fact, in Denmark the price is on the rise and in the Netherlands the DCA BestPigletPrice (BPP) is also rising for the third week in a row.

In the months of September and October it is often a matter of peddling to get the piglets placed. This year, however, trade within the fixed links continues to proceed quite easily. The sale of free flocks sometimes takes some effort, but this should not be mentioned compared to previous years.

Reasons
There are 2 reasons underlying this. Pig prices are stable, but at a high level. Following on from the stable DCA Benchmark Price - Pigs Vion's pig price is also unchanged this week: €1,93 per kilo. The second reason is that the sow herd has lost size in many European countries. This means there are no surpluses.

This means that piglet prices can easily remain afloat in the generally weak autumn months. The German VEZG has now recorded €9 per piglet for 57 weeks in a row. The Nordwest piglet price has also been maintaining this level for weeks. Historically speaking, the largest downgrade will take place in the coming weeks, but there are no signals that indicate a repeat of moves this year.

Third increase for BPP
A number of piglet prices are even looking upwards. The Danish piglet price will increase this week by €0,60 to €65 per piglet (30 kilos, PRRS-free). In the Netherlands, the DCA BestPigletPrice also increased from €0,50 to €47 per piglet for the third week in a row. Although some traders are not in favor of an increase, the average of the quotes at DCA-Markets indicates this.
