Japan imports slightly more pork

In the first 8 months of the year Japan 798.038 tons of pork imported, which is 2,1% more than in the same period last year. If we only look at the month of August, the country imported 104.261 tons in this month. The import figure last year amounted to 100.317 tons of pork. One of the largest percentage increases is again due to the Netherlands this month: +21% to 29.022 tons.

United States surrenders
Pork exports from the United States have lost ground in Japan. In 2018, Japan imported 34.718 tons from the United States in August, but that has dropped to 29.719 tons this year. When we look at the import figures for the first 8 months, we see that the United States exported 7,7% less pork to Japan. This also means that the country is catching up slightly, because in the first 6 months the deficit was 8,8%.

The top 3 is completed by Canada and Denmark. Japan imported 8 tons of pork from Canada in the first 161.448 months, which is 4,3% more than the same period last year. Denmark comes in third place and exported 8 tons of pork to Japan in the first 80.664 months of the year. This is 4% more than last year. If we only look at August, Japan imported 21.331 tons from Canada and 11.236 tons from Denmark. Both figures are higher than last year.

Striking climber
The most striking increase is for the United Kingdom. Japan imported 8% more pork from this country in the first 134,9 months of the year. However, in tonnes it is a relatively small volume. There is a visible increase from 215 tons to 505 tons. Imports from this country also doubled in August: from 48 tons to 96 tons.
