Chinese bring in breeding sows from Denmark

11 October 2019 - Wouter Baan

To boost pig production, a large Chinese pig integration has imported 906 breeding sows from Denmark. China has allowed live pigs back into the country for the first time since all the outbreaks of African swine fever.

The Danish breeding sows were imported by the Chinese integration 'CP Pokphand Co', which is the fifth largest pig integration in China according to Reuters. The animals were already flown in in August and then quarantined for 1 month, in order to prevent the introduction of any animal diseases.

Halving pig herd
Due to the outbreaks of the animal disease, China's pig herd is heading for more than a halving, according to Rabobank. This has resulted in a major meat shortage, resulting in record high pig prices. The Chinese government is currently doing everything it can to restore production. Thus there will be generous grants provided to pig farms.

The aforementioned integration also aims to increase production quickly. The plan is to increase the number of imported fattening pigs annually: from 4 million this year to 12 million in 2021. In this context, the breeding sows supplied by the Danish breeding organization DanBred have been imported.
