Meat industry sounds the alarm again

14 October 2019 - Wouter Baan - 21 comments

Clitravi, the association for the meat products industry in Europe, has sounded the alarm for the second time this year. The reason for this is the persistently high pig prices.

In a letter to the European Commission and the European Food Federation, they draw attention to the high pig prices. They have risen by 25% since January this year. The price increase is mainly due to the fact that China is importing significantly more pork to the meat shortage to catch. According to the meat-processing industry, this cuts down considerably, given that the price accounts for 50% to 75% of their production costs.

Exceptional market situation
Although the meat processors indicate that they have no influence on these price developments, they find it important that the entire pig chain is aware of the challenges that this exceptional market situation entails. Businesses (and jobs) would be at risk.

These are also challenging times for European slaughterhouses, without an export license to China. This is especially true for many Belgian slaughterhouses that are unable to export to China due to the outbreaks of African swine fever in the country.

Second time
In April, Clitravic asked even attention for the high pig prices. At the time, this caused skewed faces among many pig farmers, because, according to them, the meat processing industry is often not at home in bad times.

It remains a problem that they have a problem if the pig farmer gets a reasonable price.

it is high time that the processing industry knew that the farmer also has to earn money

They can always earn money and the pig farmers only have six months so they don't have to moan. Hopefully it won't be long before the price drops.

Really laughing with those guys, know slaughter bosses who see tens of millions of profit sloshing against the baseboards this year. I understand they would rather see hundreds of millions, the lake is never full.

what a soul mate

These should actually be normal prices for the pigs.
In fact, they've always had the pigs way too cheap.
They shouldn't complain but sell their meat more expensively to their customers!
Wim 14 October 2019
Maybe a little more expensive to sell to retail.

we also make too little now, traders who do business with china are left with 100 euros per pig at the moment.
china 3,59 euros here barely 2 euros.

It is high time that the farmer receives his real selling price, when I read it now the pig farmers are not even allowed to earn extra, but prefer to fuck off with their company now that we are in the picser again with that nitrogen madness, great shame.

China ID on its way to 4 euros at the moment 3.84 €/kg

if we had just as much solidarity in pig farming as now between the sectors, with regard to the nitrogen measures, the pig price would have been thirty cents higher here. do nothing..

The periphery earns far too much money from the farmers. Yesterday again I not news 600.000 jobs contribute to agriculture.

China has long been above €4.40 LIVE!!!, let's play a lurking
premium pig 23 October 2019
idk, LET...
bert 23 October 2019
@premium, what resources do we have to make it change?
Kees 23 October 2019
Quietly, prices in China are going to fall again
hogman 23 October 2019
Which means Bert... just do nothing for 2 weeks, deliver nothing.
Everybody stop what can we do.
Our meat products cost the consumer 1 euro 50
The cost of an ounce of cold cuts was 15 cents and is now 20 cents.
Well well.... but if you are used to not giving anything for 22 years??
Just force something with everyone!!!
sowkeeper_bert 23 October 2019
As far as the revenue model is concerned, we can demonstrate better against the periphery and customers. Then maybe one day we will get fair buying and selling prices. After all, that's where the real problem lies.

Week 35 ASIA €3.14/kg --- EU €1.93/kg
Week 43 ASIA € 4.88/kg ---EU €1.93/kg

Assuming that 15% is exported to Asia, then we were more than entitled to € 2.20/kg !!!!!
shoemakers 1 23 October 2019
from me they can also do 100% asia, I have no problem with that, or else my share of the bite !!!
premium pig 23 October 2019
What resources do we have?, actually few: playing is no longer possible with 5 slaughterhouses in the Netherlands. So there are 2 possibilities, more real cooperation (bundling volume), or just what Hogman proposes, delivering nothing for a week. But most think that all nothing, so??
