New outbreaks of swine fever in South Korea

15 October 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

Several outbreaks of African swine fever have again been identified in South Korea. According to the media in the country, this indicates that the measures to keep the animal disease at bay are not effective. In addition, the virus ensures that the demand for poultry meat in the Philippines has increased considerably.

At the end of September, the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture decided to tighten quarantine measures, with which it wanted to stop the spread of African swine fever. For example, important roads were disinfected and strict checks were carried out on companies in affected regions. Yet there have been the past 2 weeks new outbreaks of African swine fever, which means that the counters now stand at 14 outbreaks.

The ministry also reports that in mid-October 155.000 pigs cleared to be. This concerns the infected pigs and all pigs within a radius of 3 kilometers around the infected farm. In addition, it appears that more and more South Korean pig farmers are selling their pigs in an attempt to fight the animal disease.

Ask about poultry meat
In the Philippines, it now appears that pork consumption is suffering from the outbreaks of African swine fever, while the consumption of poultry meat is increasing. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) believes that pork production in the Philippines will therefore be 16% lower this year than last year. This would bring total production to 1,4 million tons. Consumption is reportedly falling to 1,75 million tons, from 1,94 million tons last year.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Agriculture expects a 13% increase in the consumption of poultry meat, which will bring the level of 2 million tons down. Since the country cannot meet all demand itself, the US Department of Agriculture expects a 27% increase in poultry meat imports.
