African swine fever is advancing towards Germany

15 November 2019 - Wouter Baan

African swine fever was found on Thursday 14 November in western Poland, near the border with Germany. A dead wild boar with the animal disease has been found in Tarnów Jezierny, which is located in the Wschowski region, the Polish Veterinary Service reported.

The infected boar was found about 100 kilometers from the border with the state of Brandenburg. Until now, the disease had only been diagnosed in eastern Poland, about 250 kilometers from Germany. Animal disease has therefore made quite a leap. The veterinary service speaks of an individual case and sees no connection with the outbreaks in Eastern Poland. Further research is still being done.

Disastrous for Germany
An outbreak of African swine fever in Germany would be disastrous. It is very likely that important markets such as China, Japan and the Philippines will then announce an import ban on German pork.
