A total of 503 pig farms have registered for the stoppage scheme of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. This number is above expectations, the ministry announced today (Thurs 16 January). Pig farmers had until yesterday to apply for the subsidy scheme.
The pig farms that cause the most odor nuisance are the first to be considered for participation. According to LNV, that is what the remediation was largely about, so that odor nuisance and emissions of substances such as ammonia can be reduced. According to the ministry, the number of 503 applicants indicates that the scheme meets a need among pig farmers.
A side note here is that with the current budget of €180 million, it is said that around 300 pig farms can close. However, Schouten is considering increasing the budget in consultation with the cabinet and the House of Representatives. When this happens, it will be the second raise to be made. The budget of the scheme has previously been increased from €120 million to €180 million.
A company that has signed up is ultimately not obliged to stop. Signing up was without obligation and also by several advisors recommended to do.
