The start of 2020 was negative for the DCA BestPigletPrice. However, the new year is not yet 3 weeks old and the listing is already...
The piglet trade is gaining momentum now that pig prices have reached a bottom. For example, Vion has indicated that it will keep the pig price the same this week at €1,87 per kilo. The slaughterhouse is not very positive: they still report a wide supply of heavy meat pigs and poor meat sales. Moreover, it is not yet clear whether meat sales will pick up again after the Chinese New Year (which will be celebrated next weekend).
Tipping point reached quickly
The stable pig price does give a boost to the demand for piglets. The supply in recent weeks was not ample and not a pressing factor. The tipping point has therefore been reached quickly. A number of traders are now again experiencing shortages. Sales to Germany are going well, due to a scarce supply there. The German quotations easily hold up at a record level of €71 per piglet. Spanish purchasing interest is also picking up again.
After a few down weeks, the DCA BestPigletPrice is looking up again. Based on the statements at DCA-Markets, the quotation increases by €0,50 to €62 per piglet. Historically, prices will continue to strengthen in the coming weeks. For the time being, however, the room for increase appears to be smaller than in other years. This is because piglet prices are already at a high level.
