Infected boar found 12 kilometers from Germany

22 January 2020 - Wouter Baan

African swine fever is spreading further and further to Germany. Top Agrar reports that an infected wild boar has been found in western Poland just 12 kilometers from the border crossing.

The animal disease has thus made another 'leap'. Last November, infected wild boars were found just 40 kilometers away and outbreaks continued after that at comparable distances.

Germany is in talks with Poland to stop the animal disease. Work is underway to build a fence to prevent infected boars from crossing the border. The subject will also be high on the agenda next Monday during a meeting of European agriculture ministers in Brussels.

Should the virus appear on German territory, it will be a disaster for pig farming. Sales markets outside Europe will then most likely close the gap for German pork.
