There is a classic imbalance between supply and demand on the piglet market. Demand is strengthened by good sales opportunities beyond national borders. Demand is boosted by rising pork prices.

For example, the Vion quotation increased this week by €0,04 to €1,95 per kilo. The increase appears to be mainly a result of the tight pig supply. According to Vion, meat sales are slow, which is partly a result of Carnival, which is being celebrated this week.

Rising piglet quotations
Piglet flocks are easily placed, especially in Spain and Germany. This is also evident from the export figures, which are only slightly behind 2019, when records were broken. The good foreign demand is also evident from the quotations. The Spanish quotation increased last week by €2 to €63 per piglet. The VEZG quotation in Germany also increased today by €2 to €77 per piglet.

There are also good sales opportunities in the Netherlands. The supply on the open market is scarce and this will probably remain the case in the coming weeks. Increasing surcharges are the result. The pig trade is therefore once again opting for higher piglet prices. The DCA BestPigletPrice therefore increases by €2,50 to €70 per piglet.
