According to the L&F, high pig prices and improved profitability of pig production led to the slight increase. Looking at the individual categories, the number of piglets (lighter than 20 kilos) increased by 1,3%. This increased the number to 2,61 million for the entire year. The category weighing 20 to 50 kilos, on the other hand, fell by 0,7% to 5,86 million pieces. The increase in the number of fattening pigs was responsible for the total increase with an increase of 96.000.

Forecast 2020
The number of sows, on the other hand, has remained largely unchanged. This amounted to approximately 1,24 million. The number of pregnant sows increased by 1,3% to 785.000. The number of uncovered sows fell by 1,9% to 459.000. Due to the productivity increases and the increase in mated sows, the L&F expects a somewhat stronger increase in pig production in the second half of 2020.
