Guarantee price Vion in the refrigerator for the time being

3 April 2020 - Wouter Baan - 14 comments

Vion informed its regular suppliers today (Friday 3 April) that the so-called price index guarantee system will be decommissioned from next week. The uncertainty in the meat market is too great, because of the corona crisis.

With the guaranteed price, part of the 'Good Farming Balance' concept, pig farmers are paid a competitive pig price. This price is based on the German VEZG quotation (40%), the Danish Crown pig price (20%), the Spanish Llerida (20%) and the Belgian Westvlees (20%).

The situation on the meat market is critical

John de Jonge COO Vion Pork

John de Jonge, COO of the Pork division, explains the decision: “The meat market is too volatile to guarantee this system. Sales to countries in Southern Europe have fallen by up to 50% in recent weeks. And South Korea is also on lockdown. This puts the square valorization in a pinch.” De Jonge indicates that a lot of meat is frozen. There is still no shortage of freezing capacity, but the situation is, all in all, very critical, according to the COO.

Intensive contact with authorities
Vion also says it will do everything it can to ensure that the supply of pigs ready for slaughter does not stagnate. To this end, there is close cooperation with bodies such as the NVWA and KDS. De Jonge points out that the inspection service is making every effort to ensure that the slaughter process runs smoothly. Vion also says it is walking the paths for support measures. “We are in close contact with the Ministry of Agriculture, the COV, the POV and Nevedi about this.”

In these dark times, there are also bright spots for Vion, because sales to China are slowly getting going again after the logistical problems in the past few weeks. "Good thing, too. Otherwise the problems would be even bigger,” says De Jonge.

Guarantee price that can be canceled unilaterally is not a guarantee price!!
Deception.

Is a breach of contract but I would be happy with this because now everyone is free again and that could soon be an advantage.

why an advantage Pietje1?

Can you sell the VLV at a free market price when the supply and corona panic decreases and China has fully started again
champion 5 April 2020
pietje1 what do you expect from the offer vlv? me and many think it should decrease since there were no piglets 2 and 3 months ago, but that has happened before and eventually the fattener catches the bone!
grunt 5 April 2020
As a closed company I now have considerably less, at least half a combination less per week.

Think less supply, but the demand cannot be estimated at the moment

They look like french fries. The contracts are worth little. The farmers and the fishermen are all for themselves. You see it with every attack on the agriculture and fisheries sector (nitrogen, pulse trawl fishing, space for windmills and nature reserves on land and sea). The government but also the industry know this so they can take annoying measures. There is always loud shouting and sputtering, but soon there is so much internal division between farmers or fishermen that people cannot unite against the measures. There is certainly no good lobby in Brussels. We are too independent and too enterprising, but actually we should protest more collectively as a group. Full against it. Now directly to the Vion, Aviko, FrieslandCampina head offices for fries, milk and pigs.

You are a smart student

But it is now possibly. corona contamination is not the right time to knock on those companies' doors. I can also imagine that the sales of certain products are stagnating and we cannot blame these companies as long as they do not abuse this.
And I currently have no concrete evidence that these companies are doing that.

Demand for BBQ meat is huge, understandable is an ideal pastime for the home.
Putting the market down in the hope that extra pigs will come loose, that's what happened.
pete1 7 April 2020
If I was as convinced as bacon, I wouldn't deliver for 1 or 2 weeks, no pig farmer has an obligation to deliver.
You have another choice that potato growers are currently jealous of
bacon steak 7 April 2020
I thought that storing potatoes is just a bit easier than live fattening pigs of 120 kg.

But I do indeed deliver as tight as possible!
pete1 7 April 2020
Pigs continue to grow if you keep feeding them and a good trader also knows what to do with heavier VLV. Potatoes can also only be stored for a limited period of time and there is no longer any demand for free potatoes
You can no longer respond.
