While pig prices have fallen. the slaughter figures remain at the same level. The number of pigs slaughtered in March 2020 is quite similar compared to previous years. This does not apply to the weight of the pigs and the percentage of meat.
Week 13 can be regarded as the most notable week in March. While 2018 and 2019 will see a decrease in the number of pigs slaughtered in this week, the number will increase to 2020 in 308.000. The 5-year average is 290.200 in the same week.
However, the weight of the pigs this week follows the example of previous years. While the pigs were considerably heavier in previous weeks than in previous years, the weight decreased by 1,3 kilos to 98,7 kilos per pig. The percentage of meat remained stable at 58,9%, but is still below previous years and the 5-year average of 59,18%.
Stable line in number of slaughters
The numbers in the other weeks maintain a stable line. In week 10, 306.000 pigs were slaughtered, in week 11 a total of 312.000 and week 12 recorded 307.000. Week 11 deviates the most from this with a 5-year average of 305.400 pigs.
Weights and percentage of meat
The weights of the pigs in weeks 10, 11 and 12 are all still on average above 100 kilos at 100, 100,2 and 100,1 kilos respectively. This means that the weights are still considerably higher than in previous years. Week 11 also peaks here. Where in previous years a small dip was noted in week 11, the week in 2020 recorded more than 3 kilos heavier pigs than the 5-year average of 97,38.
The average percentage of meat has been significantly below previous years for weeks and thus also the 5-year average. Week 10 is mainly the odd one out here. While all previous years noted an increase in the percentage of meat in week 10, week 10 remained at a percentage of 58,8%. The same week, the 5-year average recorded a percentage of 59,18%.
