Piglet price lurks at an uncanny pig market

6 April 2020 - Wouter Baan

While one trader can place the piglets fairly easily again, another complains about a tough sales market. The direction of the pig price is crucial, but it feels rather eerie.

Opinions about the piglet market vary widely. This also leads to large differences in price quotes at DCA Markets, which vary from unchanged to reductions of up to €3,50 per piglet. Traders with many free market couples in particular opt for a significant reduction, which in itself is not surprising now that exports are sluggish.

Within the fixed connections, the market is reasonably balanced. Nevertheless, the DCA BestPigletPrice cannot remain stable and falls from €0,50 to €63 per piglet. There are also reportedly some free couples in Germany. However, this does not put pressure on the piglet price, as the VEZG quotation remains the same again this week at €76 per piglet.

German pig market 'uncanny'
The direction that pig prices take will determine the mood in the piglet market in the coming weeks. The idea is that if the pig price remains stable, the piglet market can too. This is not a done race, now that the pressure on pig prices is below the surface plays up again.

With the prospect of a slaughter day next Monday (due to Easter), the German mark feels 'uncanny'. The chance of a reduction is considerable. In the Netherlands, Vion will leave the pig price unchanged this week at €1,95 per kilo. The slaughterhouse is negative about the meat market.

This is also evident from the meat mutations at DCA-Markets, which shows that hams (-12 cents per kilo), ribs (-9) and attorneys (-18) are under considerable pressure. The meat market is also very negative in the US, causing the pork price to rise crashed. Like Tönnies, Vion also indicates that it is affected by this.
