Recently, the first African Swine Fever (ASF) infection among domestic pigs was reported in Western Poland. A second outbreak on a pig farm has now also been confirmed.
This second outbreak was confirmed on a farm in the village of Więckowice, municipality of Dopiewo, in the province of Wielkopolskie. It concerns a company where approximately 10.000 pigs and piglets were kept.
The first infection, confirmed on March 20, took place at a different location but was on a farm belonging to the same company as this second infection. The virus was first detected on a breeding sow farm in Otyń Municipality in Lubuskie Province.
Companies with infections were related
The piglets were originally moved from the company at the Lubuskie site to the Wielkopolskie site for further rearing. After the first case of infection was confirmed at the site in Lubuskie, there were already fears of further spread of the virus via piglets already sold to the company in Więckowice. As a result, the company was already under the stricter supervision of the veterinary inspection. For example, no animals were allowed to be moved to or from the farm and samples were taken.
Sample collection
At the Więckowice farm, test samples were taken from deceased animals. These samples were used for laboratory testing for early detection of ASF infection. The results of the first tests at the company turned out to be negative. However, on April 5, again 5 tests were carried out on dead animals, and these tests were positive. The virus was detected in 2 of the 5 samples taken.
Coronavirus restricts wild boar hunting
In addition, the measures surrounding the corona virus affect the hunting of wild boars. On April 3, a ban was imposed on entering state forests and national parks. There is no exception to this prohibition for hunters. As a result, it is not possible to hunt in the woods until April 11. This means that hunters can only carry out their activities outside the closed areas.
