Brazil exports record amount of pork

17 April 2020 - Jorine Cosse

The high demand for meat in Asia has given the pork sector in Brazil a huge boost. The country exported almost 2020% more meat in the first quarter of 30 than in the same quarter a year earlier. Never before has Brazil exported so much meat in the same period.

In total, Brazil exported 224.600 tons of pork in the first quarter. This is an increase of 27% compared to the same quarter in 2019. Exports increased sharply by no less than 35%, especially in January. This is followed by March with an increase of 29% and then February with an increase of 19%. The increased export is mainly due to the high demand for meat from China, due to the outbreak of the African Swine Fever.

Asian question
The ASF outbreak in China has opened a door for Brazil. More than half of the total exports went to the Asian superpower, including Hong Kong. Total exports to China almost tripled compared to the first quarter of 2019. 63.700 more tonnes crossed the border than in 2019.

Other Asian countries such as Japan and Vietnam also formed a large market for Brazilian meat. Here too, the outbreak of ASF has left a gap in domestic production, making exports necessary to continue to meet the population's meat demand.

Russia
Russia was previously the largest importer of Brazilian pork. Due to the increase in exports to China, the volume that now leaves for Russia has decreased considerably. This is not only due to increased Asian demand. In 2018, Russia imposed a ban on imports, partially eliminating this sales market for Brazil. Although demand from Russia is recovering, the Asian market seems more interesting for Brazilian exports.

Influence of corona
To date, the corona outbreak appears to have had little impact on Brazilian pork exports. This is also confirmed in a study conducted by Rabobank. So far, all meat processors are keeping their machines running. The only concern expressed is regarding the availability of feed. There is concern about whether enough remains available for meat producers.
