In Germany, domestic meat production and meat consumption have fallen. This is apparent from the preliminary meat balance of the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food Supply (BLE).
German meat production fell last year. Over the whole of 2019, production amounted to 8,35 million tons of slaughter weight. This is a decrease of 2,3% compared to the previous year.
Not only the production of meat, but also consumption has recently decreased. Given that the population size does not fluctuate much, this decrease is due to a declining consumption per capita. According to the BLE, meat consumption per capita in 2019 averaged 59,5 kilos, a decrease of 2,6% compared to 2018. This means that the limit of at least 60 kilos has been broken for German meat consumption.
The decrease in production and consumption of meat runs almost parallel. As a result, the degree of self-sufficiency has changed only marginally. This went from 114,5% to 114,4%.
Pork
Looking at meat production and consumption, pork has played a major role in the overall decline. In total domestic meat production, pork production has been decreasing in particular. Net pork production in 2019 was about 5,2 million tons. Compared to 2018, this is a decrease of 3,2%.
Pork consumption has also played a major role in the total decrease in meat consumption. The fact that the limit of the average consumption of 60 kilos has been broken is mainly due to the decrease in pork consumption. The average consumption amount of pork fell to 2019 kilograms in 34,1, compared to 35,7 kilograms in the previous year.
