Vion closes slaughter location in Germany due to corona

5 May 2020 - Wouter Baan

Vion Germany has closed a cattle slaughter site in Bad Bramstedt (Schleswig Holstein) in Germany. This is due to a large number of corona infections among the employees.

About 50 of the 260 employees have tested positive for the coronavirus. No symptoms have been detected in 90% of the infections, Agrarheute reports. Many employees also live together in a former barracks near the slaughter location.

Supply is divided
The approximately 3.200 cattle that are slaughtered every week at the location are provisionally distributed among the other locations of the meat group in Germany. In terms of numbers, this appears to be manageable. However, the outbreak at Vion is a signal that the coronavirus is also increasingly spreading in European slaughterhouses, as is also the case in the United States and Brazil.
