Slaughter at Vion Netherlands continues

6 May 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

Meat processor Vion has staff members who are infected with the corona virus at its location in Scherpenzeel. It concerns Eastern European labor migrants who have been placed in isolation this weekend. According to Nancy Aschman, Vion spokeswoman, the slaughter process can continue as usual.

Previously, corona infections have been detected among staff at meat processors in Europe. In Germany and Spain, many staff members turned out to have the virus. In Brazil, the corona virus has also spread to meat processing companies and the Dutch slaughter sector has now also not escaped the infection.

In Germany, Vion has a slaughter location closed in connection with corona infections among the staff. The slaughter location of Vion Nederland in Scherpenzeel, on the other hand, will remain open. According to Aschman, the slaughter process is not endangered and it can simply continue. "Colleagues were informed of the situation on Monday morning and they still dare to continue working."

Virus detection
"We have been told by the GGD that the relevant staff members are infected with the corona virus," says Aschman. The GGD found out about this after tests were carried out among the migrants whose co-residents were recently hospitalized.

Nothing is known about the background to the Vion spokeswoman and she can also say little about the current investigation. “We are not involved in the investigation that the GGD is currently conducting.”

Safety precautions
Vion tries to take into account the measures prescribed by the RIVM and the GGD as much as possible. The measures have been in place since the end of February, since it was announced that the virus has also entered the Netherlands. Aschman has the following to say about this: “Obviously, we already worked very hygienically. Employees are wearing suits, hats, gloves and mouth caps and the like. We have taken a lot of extra hygiene measures. You can think of pumps hanging everywhere for washing hands, but also Plexiglas in various departments.”

In addition, the staff's walking route and the division of shifts are also examined so that not all staff are together in the canteen to take a break. Aschman indicates that the options are now being examined to optimally apply this at each location. “We are a large company and we have to see how we can best organize this. We also have to take the longer term into account, the situation is probably going to take a long time and of course we don't expect this to be solved in a few weeks."

Westfleisch Germany
There are also corona infections at the Coesfeld location at the Westfleisch company. 64 staff members have now tested positive for the virus. The location continues to produce production under stricter measures to this day. The staff is divided into smaller groups and wears mouth and nose protection. In addition, a contactless temperature meter is used
