The piglet market is in dire straits, now that the bottom of pig prices has completely disappeared. In itself, the supply of piglets does not even constitute excessive culling, traders indicate. However, sales are stagnating because pork farmers are holding back and lack confidence.

Not only in the Netherlands, but also export demand is very weak. Flocks are being canceled from Germany, now that slaughterhouse(s) there are required to close. In any case, it is one location of Westfleisch closed this week and it is not excluded that more parties will follow. The German authorities are investigating other traces of contamination and more consequences may follow.

Ratings down sharply
All in all, piglet sales are not going well at all. Stabilization of the pig price may provide some support, but that is still a long way off. This week Vion lowers the pig price by 9 cents to €1,56 per kilo. The meat company indicates that the situation on the meat markets is continuing to deteriorate.

In order to maintain piglet sales at some level, traders are once again opting for a significant correction of the DCA BestPigletPrice, which drops by €6,50 to €40 per piglet. The German VEZG piglet quotation drops by €54 per piglet.
