Interview John Schuttert

Schuttert: Yield in pigs could be even higher

14 May 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

Handelshuis Schuttert will start its own feed company on 1 July in collaboration with feed consultant Jan Kippers. In an interview with Boerenbusiness Johan Schuttert tells us about the reason for this step and the ambitions of the company.

Why the choice to switch to feed?
“We have a number of farms ourselves and would like shorter lines. We see that sometimes not everything runs smoothly. With the combination of good feed and the right advice, we want to raise the balance in pig farming to a higher level. Steps can be made both in multiplication and with fattening pig farmers, but of course that starts with a good piglet.”

“We see opportunities in 2 areas. First of all, the balance has to be increased, some entrepreneurs still leave too much behind. This has to do with the technical result, but also with the associated sales. The sale of slaughterhouses to different countries also means different wishes. This requires the right expertise and direction, we want to shorten those lines. In this way, the technical result of the companies can be improved and more in line with sales."

How did the collaboration with Jan Kippers come about?
“We approached Jan Kippers ourselves a while ago. We have already discussed what the future will look like, from the trade perspective but also from the feed perspective. We think highly of Jan Kippers because as a young guy he already has a lot of experience in various areas. While talking we came to this idea together."

"The feed will be produced under the trade name 'Kippersvoeders'. The first step is to transfer the feed from our own 6 farms. This includes all facets: the sows, the piglets and the finishing pigs. The idea is to first farms, and then possibly others.”

What ambitions do you have?
“We haven't said exactly how big we want to be. The idea is to start with our own farms and perhaps there are also entrepreneurs in our own customer base who can and want to use the guidance.”

Finally: how do you, as a trader, view the enormous price drop on the pig and piglet market?
“At the moment, the situation as a result of the corona crisis is of course very annoying. The most important thing is that the processes can continue as usual. We come from high, so the farmers who have performed well technically, they do have some fat on the bones. It can be done temporarily for less money, but the processes must be able to continue. If at some point more slaughterhouses close, there will be an accumulation in the chain. Let's hope that doesn't happen. We have to get through this difficult period, but I do expect that there will be positivity again in the long run.”
